Turns out there is some truth to the old adage "you are what you eat".
A little refresher course in anatomy reminds us that our skin is our largest
organ. AND our largest elimination organ. Our other 'detox' organs
are our kidneys, liver, lungs and intestines. These organs keep us alive
and functioning even when we bombard them with poor diets, pollution,
free radicals and countless other toxins. And that beautiful sheath covering
our bodies picks up the slack and helps eliminate the yucky stuff through
sweat. But don't worry, this is not the part where I tell you to drink
only vegetable juice for 3 days and miracles will happen. It actually
takes a lot more than that. Our complexion can tell a lot about the state
of internal health. Wrinkles, dry and oily patches, acne and inflammation
are sometimes a result of what we're putting (or not putting) into
our bodies! Here are some quick and easy tips to help our hard-working
skin look its best. Cut down on caffeine and alcohol, both dehydrate and
dull our complexion. Drink green tea instead! You will get a small hit
of caffeine while loading up on antioxidants called polyphenols (important
stuff). Eliminate as much junk food as you can, especially processed sugar.
Sugar causes glycation which is a fancy word meaning the breakdown of
proteins, including collagen and elastin! Yikes! One of their primary
functions is giving our skin strength and resilience! We need both to
keep our skin supple and firm! Consume adequate amounts of water and lots
of fresh vegetables and fruits, especially leafy greens and berries! Simply
put, what's good for our insides is good for outside too!
