What Acne Scar Treatments are available?
Acne Scars or post inflammatory acne scarring can be caused by even the mildest cases of acne. The scarring can cause loss of self-confidence, and embarrassment which, in turn, can lead to both professional and personal issues. Previously, the best ways to treat acne were dermabrasion and acid peels. Unfortunately, these methods for treating acne scars were painful, unpredictable and fraught with potential side-effects. Early laser treatments were limited to Carbon Dioxide and Erbium full facial resurfacing. Although effective, they also had tremendous side effects, including pain, infection, skin color changes, blistering, and months of redness. ProFractional Laser Resurfacing
Today, the gold standard for acne scar treatment is fractional lasers. Factional laser treatments don’t evaporate the entire surface of the skin at one time. Microscopic laser beams tunnel under the skin creating deep shafts called microthermal zones (MTZ) under the skin. The healthy tissue around the MTZ heals quickly and leaves you with minimal or no down time. Fractional lasers, unlike full ablative resurfacing, only treats a small portion of the skin at any one treatment leaving healthy, normal skin around the treated area. When a microthermal zone is created, it stimulates collagen production in the MTZ which in turn appears to decrease the appearance of the acne scars. We use the most effective fractional laser: the Sciton Profractional Plus. Dr. Gutman is the most experienced doctor in the country using the Profractional Plus. He is the doctor Sciton uses to train new physcians on their lasers. Dr. Gutman will discuss the differences with you at the time of your free consultation. He may even tell you that he will use both lasers at different times depending on your circumstances. If your case is very severe, Dr. Gutman may jump start the procedures with the Sciton Countour Er:YAG laser.
